Boca Grande Community Center Improvements

Location: Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island
Date: Multiple phases ending between 2024-2026

Boca Grande is a residential community thriving through its people. A non-profit organization, Friends of Boca Grande, has been committed to the power of community bonds by engaging residents with lectures, entertainment, and community events through its local community center. The Friends desired to have a new auditorium constructed, as well as multiple additions and renovations to the different buildings on site. The improvements will occur in a series of phases, and a breakdown of these developments can be found below.

The Community Center Building:
The main hub of the community center will be receiving improvements to its doorways and thresholds, allowing more natural light for the spaces inside, while minor remodeling helps restore parts of the historic Boca Grande School.

The Proposed Auditorium:
Friends of Boca Grande decided to demolish the non-historic multipurpose building located behind the Community Center and Island School in order to construct a new auditorium to showcase future community events and entertainment.

The Island School:
The non-historic Island School will be receiving a building addition near the rear of the current building. This new addition will meet with the newly proposed auditorium, and the outdoor space made by this forms a courtyard for the existing playground.

The Teacherage House:
As one of the two historic houses making up the community center here at Boca Grande, the Teacherage House is set to undergo some interior renovations, as well as an expansion of the connecting deck and the addition of two shade awnings shared with the Dishong Bowen House located just East of it.

The Dishong Bowen House:
Though not a registered historic house like Teacherage and Crowninshield, the Dishong Bowen House still holds importance to the community center here on Boca Grande! Therefore, it will be receiving a toilet room addition, as well as the shared shade awnings with the Teacherage House. Furthermore, the building will receive an expanded entry and other minor improvements.

The Crowninshield House:
As the second historic house here in the community center, the Crowninshield House will undergo some interior remodeling, with an addition of an elevated deck at the South side of the house. The existing kitchen will also be remodeled and expanded to continue adding functionality to this historically important community center.
